So…what’s the best way to lose leg fat?
In this article, I’m going to give you three steps to get ripped legs.
Why is it so difficult to lose leg fat?
Leg Fat is just like any other fat on the body…it is stored fat. So in order to get rid of it, you have to reduce overall body fat. This comes from the right diet and an effective workout.
Here are three steps you can take to start losing leg fat today.:
Step 1: Check your diet. If you are not eating a healthy diet that is low in calories, get on one as quickly as possible. This will make a huge difference. The eating plan I have used for a while to reduce my body fat significantly is a 400-calorie Meal Plan from Prevention. You can check out the book at Amazon. I would eat five meals from this 400-calorie list each day. This really worked well for me…and it is very easy to follow.
As a personal trainer and fitness center owner, I’d see people all the time that join our gym with all the right intentions. They exercise very hard. They come regularly.
The problem is, you can’t outrun your fork. Your eating plan has to be in place.
Step 2: Use circuit training. Circuit training is a form of weight training where you perform several exercises in succession, rest, and repeat. Circuit training burns massive calories both during and after your workout. Pick exercises that work your leg muscles, and you will torch leg fat.
Below, I included a sample leg-based circuit workout that I have used. This workout is very effective for burning calories and toning your legs.
I performed this workout three days a week with a day of rest in between. I would do all the exercises listed, rest two minutes and repeat for three total sets. Here are the reps that I used:
- Medicine Ball Jumping Jacks — 20-30 reps
- Dumbbell Dead lifts — 10-15 reps
- Plank — 45 sec – 1 min
- Dumbbell Squats – 8-12 reps
- Lunges – 10 reps each side
Step 3: perform cardiovascular training.
The most ripped my legs have ever been was when I would do a circuit workout like the one in the video, then immediately perform cardiovascular exercise for about 20-30 minutes on a stationary bike or elliptical machine. I did the 20-30 minutes of cardio at a medium pace. In other words on a scale of 1-10 where ten is full sprint and one is sitting on the couch, I was about a five.
The theory behind this is that circuit-type training is effective at releasing stored fat from fat cells. The 20-30 minutes of medium-intensity cardiovascular uses this fat for fuel, creating a fat-burning “perfect storm.”
So, that’s it for how to lose leg fat.
Diet. Circuit training. Cardiovascular exercise.
Good luck and train hard.

Best Workout to Lose Leg Fat…
Update: Since I wrote this article on how to lose leg fat, a weight loss program has come out that I highly recommend you get. It is the best program I’ve seen for losing not just leg fat, but fat everywhere. The program is called Visual Impact Cardio.
P.S. I do get a commission if you buy this product, but I would highly recommend it regardless…it is that good. Plus, if you decide to get it through this link, email me a copy of your receipt at info{at}20minutefatloss.net, and I will give you a copy of my Killer Legs Workout ($24.95 value, shown above right) for free.
Just replace {at} with @.
Then you have not only the Visual Impact Cardio for reducing fat, but also the Killer Legs Workout to tone your legs. This is the “perfect storm” combo to lose leg fat.
Hope this helps.

I like where you are heading with the idea of releasing fat from the cells and then using it for fuel. Two things for your readers to keep in mind as try the circuit training/cardio combo. First, unless you are in a ketogenic state you will use glycogen as wellduring the cardio part. Second that glycogen depletion is going to make you crave carbs…make sure you replenish your energy stores with good food choices. The tendecy aftter cardio is to over eat the carbs so you may burn an extra 200 calories and promptly gorge on 300 calories therefore defeating your training session.
Like Josh said, get your diet in line!
Great comment Richard. I absolutely agree. I talk about diet many places on this site and I consider diet to be about 80% of someone’s results (just my personal estimate based on my experience). Can’t outrun the fork
Thanks for the feedback.
Hello Josh,
I was searching for how to get rid of leg fat and stumbled on your website. I have ugly leg fat due to which I find uncomfortable wearing short scurts. I will check out the book that you have mentioned.
Thanks Emily, I appreciate the comment. The exercises listed above are great for getting rid of leg fat.
Hi Josh,
This is a great article you have put togather. My main concern is my thighs, they are a to big for my height and im at the high end of healthy weight on the BMI test. When i put on jeans it feels like my thighs are the thing that make s me look even bigger other then my stomach. My question is that this video you put up will burn alot of the fat away?
Thank you
I forgot to mention that i have bad knees and its hard to do squats and lunges. Is there anything you can suggest to do?
Hey Danielle, this workout really worked well for me to burn fat when I combined it with a healthy diet. But with anything in fitness or nutrition, you should consult your doctor prior to changing anything.
Yeah, you definitely want to consult a doctor if you have an injury or knee problems. There are other exercises you can do that aren’t as hard but you should let a physician direct you on which ones.
